July 2008

Our friends Ramon and Lourdes run the Barcelona Fanatics website. They believe in supporting the arts… with cash! They bought a table. They are happy with it. They even let their child touch it. Life is good.

I have to say this for the Barcelona media… they have been berry, berry good to us… and as usual we are often without a clue until some stranger heps us to exactly what is happening. So this couple stops by the stand at Pulgas Mix. They like the tables, they really like the tables… so they say to Benedicte, “Wow! These are great! When we read about you in the paper we thought you would be “pijos!” Pijos is a pretty tough word to describe yuppies, they don’t mince words here in Spain… unless of course you are trying to get your neighbors terrace from turning your living room into a piscina… but that is another story. Anyway Benedicte says, “Ah thanks… what paper?” So they whip out “Sortim”, the weekend guide from the Avui newspaper. It’s sort of like the New York Times Sunday Magazine… OK… Parade magazine…. OK… a little of both and a lot like Time Out. So there we are, front and center in a slick multi-page spread about Pulgas Mix. I’ll post the full article a little later.

Elizabeth bought one of the tables this weekend. She seems pretty happy. Which makes us pretty happy too!

I made some decisions this weekend which have given a new flavour to my life path etc… and have chosen The Pink Console as the stepping stone (table) commemorating the fact. So I have also started an electronic journal of sorts (of sorts, cuz I really don’t do that sort of thing!) and named it The Pink Console. Thanks for offering such a thing of beauty and labour of love to my life and home!

P.S. Fortunately, Tiger, cat on the right, has not made it his new launching pad to fly off the balcony. A good sign, that!

hasta pronto, I hope!

The big news this weekend was the introduction of our new item: Trivets! Hotpads! Coasters! Objay duh Art! Call them what you will they are a single modernista tile mounted in a “oh so heavy” solid steel frame made by our metalugista pal Jaume. Like everything here they come straight out of the sacos de obras and then have the usual 2 inches of concrete and mortar removed by hand, then they get the same finish as the tables and are fit into these hand made frames. Right now they come in a polished steel finish but soon we will add oxidized (AKA rust) and a new anealed black treatment. They look great, they ship well and the price… a bargain. Check them out on our flickr account by clicking on the above photo.

Well we had a number of happy customers this weekend. Thanks to all for supporting the cause.

The Convent de Sant Agusti was rockin’ and we had a great time. What a wonderful bunch of crazy, lovely people inhabit the nether world of design and art. And we supported the arts by spending some of our hard won cash on a lamp from a girl from Argentina (our 10th aniversary wedding present!). Next door was a swell artist. I tried to get in some pants made by our pal Javier but, sadly my days in these kind of outfits are probably over. I also tried a pair of super cool shorts from him but Benedicte wisely pointed out that the shorts were white and my hands are often covered in things like varnish, rust and other caustic substances. An old guy once told me to never hire a man who wore gloves and smoked a pipe… by the time he put his pipe down and put on his gloves the job would be over. Yeah, but what if he wore white pants?

Ramon and Lourdes from the Barcelona Fanatics website stopped by with their youngster… who was too young to buy anything. We’ll wait for you young man, We’ll wait for you.
