Pulgas Mix

Well we’re at it again. This weekend we will be baking at our second Pulgas Mix located in the fabulously beautiful Convent de Sant Agusti in the hip Barrio Born. The oh so groovey mercadillo de artistas, astisanas y diseñadores from our very own Barcelona. We are taking this oportunity to introduce our newest innovation in antique modernista tiles… wearable tiles… yes it’s true now you too can be one of the fashionable few to sling the ultimate bling around your neck. Heavy yeah, you bet but then so was Isaac Hayes and you didn’t hear him complain, did you? No seriously we have some new tables and yes a new product that we think is pretty great. Drop by and say moin, moin…

Pulgas Mix July 5th and 6th, 2pm until 10pm.
Centre Civic Convent de Sant Agusti
Calle Comerc, 36 Born, Barcelona, España
Admission: Only 1€!

Our network of artists and artisans continues to expand. About 6 months ago Ramon Torres found us at the Zapato Rojo feria. He told us that he produces a web site that features the work of local BCN artists and crafts people and he loved our work and wanted to include us… and it would be initially “free.” I dunno know about you but these kind of things tend to scare me, it feels like buying a time share condo or a vacuum cleaner or something… like where’s the hook, and exactly at which point will we get burnt on the deal. Well as it turns out Ramon really is a friend to a large part of Barcelona’s arts community and his website really is free to the artists (he does charge you if you want your own page but it’s super inexpensive). And looking at the work of the very creative folks that hang their shingle there I guess we should consider ourselves lucky to be asked. Our page can be found here. The home page for the overall site is here.

A few weeks ago I contacted Metropolitan Magazine (a wonderful magazine for expats like us living in Barcelona). I thought the Mesa Bonita story might be of interest to them. The editor answered right back telling me my timing was terrific and that they had just finished writting an article about tiles but that they would love to include us. The article will come out in the August issue.

So the other day, the writer, Alx Phillips, came over and spent a couple of hours hearing about our endeavor. Earlier she had interviewed Arturo Hernandez, the author of the fabulous Barcelona Tiles book. She explained that we would both be published in the same article. Oh boy what a great honor!

Since then Alx has fallen in love with hydraulic tiles and their story and has gone out of her way to introduce us to Arturo. Needless to say that sharing our passion with others is always a pleasure.

Arturo

When we first entered this new world of concrete and powdered marble we had no idea about much of anything. We had vague notions and heard lots of rumors but mostly it was all pretty much a mystery. Somehow we got word of a book that told all about these tiles. We found Arturo Hernandez’ beautiful book at the oddly named Happy Books on the fashionable Passaig de Gracia and through his exhaustive explorations of all things hydraulic we began to unravel some of the puzzle. We have become friends with Arturo and have come to realize that if there is a hydraulic tile world wide authority he is it. His book is available here on Amazon. He has also recently completed an equally beautiful book on the hydraulic tiles of Havana.
